Delta Sun Safety

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Delta Sun Safety

Many BC families enjoy spending time together outside. Whether it is in the mountains or at the beach, fresh air and sunshine make family time a fun time. Delta parents should make sure that their children are adequately protected from UV rays when enjoying outside time. Young skin can burn easily and one severe sunburn in childhood increases the chance of developing melanoma later in life two-fold. BC babies should not even be exposed to the sun. Cover them with clothing and keep them in the shade. When your Delta child is six months old, limited exposure to UV rays is okay, but use a healthy dose of sunscreen and common sense. The sunscreen sold at your Delta supermarket or drugstore should be applied thirty minutes before your kids go outside.

If you are enjoying time at the pool or beach make sure to regularly reapply often.  When my kids swim at the Vancouver pool they take many breaks in the shade to reapply sunscreen and hydrate. My name is Phil Hoskins and I am a Delta-based Activ, the healthy chocolate beverage representative and an advocate for BC children’s health. There are many things to worry about as a parent., but I never have to worry about the healthy snacks I give my kids. Organic Best For Vancouver Kids

Organic Best For Vancouver Kids

Food labels can be confusing for Vancouver parents wanting to buy the most nutritious food possible for their families. The word ‘natural’ can convey wholesomeness–but that’s not always the case.

Look for more specific food labels like ‘organic’ which means, in fruits and vegetables, that the food is grown without pesticides. Some evidence suggests that organic fruits and vegetables contain higher amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients than non-organic.

The organic label on poultry, meat, and dairy means that no antibiotics, hormones, or pesticides are given to the animals, and the livestock are given only organic feed. ‘Organic’ livestock also must have access to the outdoors, and disease is prevented through natural methods.

‘Natural’ isn’t a term regulated by the FDA, so products with this label may still contain additives. Instead, look for the USDA organic badge, a guarantee that there is no high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil, genetically modified ingredients, or artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners.

Vancouver children and infants are the most vulnerable to hormone and pesticide exposure due to their less-developed immune systems and their still-developing brains and bodies. Vancouver parents who provide organic food support their child’s health now and in the future.

Homemade Activities For Delta Kids

Homemade Activities For Delta Kids

It shouldn’t cost a fortune to get your Delta kids fun, educational toys. Here at the Delta Children’s Health Blog we want to provide parents with some ideas to keep their young children’s minds healthy. This homemade activity for toddlers uses an egg carton and encourages development of fine motor skills.

You’ll need:
Empty egg carton
Plastic Easter eggs, in assorted colors
Card stock, or other heavy paper
Markers
Puff balls, in assorted colors

Many of these supplies are probably already in your Vancouver area homes. For the rest, they can easily be found at any Langley, Surrey, or Richmond dollar store.

Vancouver parents can take the card stock, cut it into cards, and draw an egg shape on each card. Then color each egg in a different color-combination. Have your kids draw a card, and when they see they color combination, they’ll take the plastic eggs from the carton and assemble the same combination from the eggs.

Your Delta children will have fun while keeping their minds active and healthy as they practice learning their colors and copying color patterns.

Another great activity for Vancouver kids is to have them put colored puff balls inside the same color of egg. For safety, make sure the puff balls aren’t a choking hazard.

Keep Young Richmond Athletes Hydrated

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Keep Young Richmond Athletes Hydrated

It’s important for kids to be active, but during times of prolonged exercise, especially during hot weather, Richmond kids can become dehydrated. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration, when your child says he’s thirsty, he may already be suffering from dehydration.

Ironically, swimming increases the risk of dehydration because water activities forestall feelings of thirst.

Encourage your Richmond child to drink extra fluids before an activity begins and continue drinking every 20 to 30 minutes during the course of the event. Try to schedule practices and games in the mornings or evenings, especially during the Richmond summer sports season to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Signs of dehydration can include:

dry mouth
lack of, or dark yellow, urine
cool, dry skin
lethargy, or irritability
dizziness
headaches

When treating a child for dehydration, water is best for the first hour or two, then sports drinks with electrolytes can be added. Most V4M 1Z9 zip code area parks and ball fields are near convenience stores that carry Gatorade or Propel, but it’s best to keep a bottle or two in the car. If hydration is not restored, hurry to the nearest Delta emergency room.

Music Benefits Delta School Children

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Music Benefits Delta School Children

Delta parents know that healthy kids need love, high-quality education, proper nutrition, cultural opportunities, and lots of exercise for well-rounded lives. For many BC children, a well-rounded life also includes music in one form or another. Most kids (especially toddlers) love dancing to, singing along with, and playing music.

Studies have shown that music does much more than simply entertain.

Children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science areas. They also learn better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

It’s best for Vancouver parents to start their kids young, but it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. A good way to expose children to free musical events is through BC community performance programs. Check with Langley, Surrey, and Richmond libraries and community centers for more information.

Any music store in the V4M 1Z9 zip code area will have great advice about Vancouver area music lessons and teachers for your child.

Keep up the good work, Delta parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy! My name is Phil Hoskins and I am very interested in kids health in Richmond. Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Delta

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Delta

Welcome to my Vancouver children’s health blog. My fifth grader’s elementary teacher recently sent home a note encouraging good homework habits for all of her Delta students. The note included this suggestion: ‘Eat a healthy snack before sitting down to study.’

My kids and I sat down to brainstorm some healthy snacks they could eat before beginning their homework each afternoon. After compiling our list we headed to our favorite Vancouver grocery store to stock up on after-school snacks.

Here are my kids top ten healthy homework snacks!

Frozen grapes (or other favorite fruit)
String cheese
Fruit leather
Dried apricots
Nuts
Hummus with veggies
Yogurt
Celery dipped in peanut butter
Fruit smoothies
Popcorn

Vancouver kids can focus better when they have healthy snacks handy. Another important thing to remember is that kids are more likely to eat healthy snacks if they can choose their favorites. I am a local Activ, the healthy chocolate beverage representative and an advocate for children’s health in BC. To learn more about healthy snacking, contact me today at 604.943.8598 or phil@philhoskins.com.

Keeping Langley Kids Healthy In Daycare

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Keeping Langley Kids Healthy In Daycare

keeping-kids-healthyIf you are like most Langley parents, you do your best to keep your kids healthy. You take them to your BC pediatrician for immunizations and vaccinations, teach them good hygiene habits, and try to get them to eat their veggies.

But what about kids in Langley daycare centers? Who is making sure children wash hands after using the bathroom and cover sneezes and coughs?

When researching V4M 1Z9 zip code area daycare providers, ask them about their health and safety policies. Do they require that sick children stay home? Do they clean and disinfect tables and play areas? Do they require frequent hand washing?

Parents of children in daycare can do much on their own. They need to keep up-to-date on kids immunizations in Langley and ensure that their children are eating a wide variety of healthy foods to keep their immune system ready for anything that comes their way.

Even with all BC parents and daycare providers do to prevent it, children will get sick. However, some studies have shown that children in daycare actually get less colds when they’re older than children that stay home. When first attending daycare, children may get sick a lot, but after about one year they often build up immunity, and are sick about as often as their stay-at-home counterparts. I guess the old saying is true (at least in this case): what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.

My name is Phil Hoskins and I promote children’s health in Vancouver. I am also the owner of an easy part time Delta home business as a distributor of Peanut Butter Cups. If you are interested in learning how you can own your own children’s health business, give me a call at 604.943.8598.

How to Choose a Vancouver Pediatrician

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

How to Choose a Vancouver Pediatrician

Keeping children healthy is among the highest priorities for Delta, BC parents.

There are hundreds of qualified pediatricians to help with your health goals in the Langley, Surrey, and Richmond area, but how do you choose one?

Since these medical professionals are the people you will rely on to give your child immunizations and advise you on proper nutrition for your family, you’ll want someone you’re comfortable with.

One of the best things you can do is to ask other Vancouver parents which pediatricians they recommend. As soon as you have a few names, you can begin calling the offices and perusing the websites for each practice.

Here are a few questions to keep in mind when talking to the receptionist or nurse on the phone:

Where did the doctor go to medical school?
Is the staff friendly?
Are the office hours convenient for your schedule?
Does the doctor belong to a group practice where they can cover for each other during vacations, etc.?
What hospital does the doctor or practice use?

When you have narrowed down your list to a pediatrician that fits these criteria, you can visit the office and ask the staff or pediatrician any additional questions you may have. This is one of the best ways to understand children’s healthcare in Surrey.

I’m Phil Hoskins and children’s health is very important to me. I am the owner of a great Delta home business that sells a nutritional chocolate product. If you are interested in learning more, visit my web site at http://philhoskins.com/more-about-xocai or give me a call at 604.943.8598.
