Food Safety Tips For Surrey Parents

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Richmond Kids Health

Parents in the Vancouver and Langley area who want to give their children proper nutrition usually start by buying more fresh, unprocessed food. This is always a step in the right direction for your children’s health, but you should be aware of how long these foods stay fresh and safe to eat.

After picking up produce at your local Richmond or Delta grocery store, make sure you know the best way to store the various types of fruits and vegetables that your family enjoys.

Check the expiration dates on your dairy products. Store them in the coolest parts of your fridge, never in the door. It’s also a good idea to keep a cooler bag in your car so you can keep these items cool as you drive home from your Langley grocer or Vancouver area farmer’s market.

Be sure to rinse all produce well before eating. Meat should also be kept cold until you are ready to cook it. It should be kept in the fridge and used within 2 or 3 days. Cooked meat should be kept no longer than 4 days in the fridge. If your kids like healthy leftovers that include meat, make sure you eat them within the next day or two, or freeze for later use.

Fresh food is usually far more nutritious than pre-packaged convenience items, so don’t be afraid of fresh food. Making a meal plan before you shop helps ensure that you will use all of the fresh ingredients before they go bad.

Individual vs. Team Sports For Vancouver Kids

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Individual vs. Team Sports For Vancouver Kids

There are growing numbers of kids in the Delta area involved in team sports. Participating in these activities can be a very positive experience for Vancouver kids. They can enhance health and fitness, social maturity, and even cognitive development.

What if your child doesn’t want to participate in organized team sports in your BC community? Perhaps they have yet to develop the skills necessary or find team sports too competitive or intimidating.

Fortunately, Delta children who participate in individual sports or even simple playful activities can receive the same benefits. With a team, the child has a coach to guide and encourage them in the chosen sport. Absent the team and coach, the guidance can come from the active role parents play in their child’s chosen sport.

BC parents who playfully nurture their child by playing catch, shooting baskets, or tossing pitches, encourage skill and personal development without the possible downsides of competition.

Many parents in Vancouver are organizing non-competitive sports groups. These allow kids to experience sports, meet new friends, and enjoy the improved health and fitness that comes from being active.

My name is Phil Hoskins and I am a local Activ, the healthy chocolate beverage representative. I advocate for children’s health and would love to talk to you today. Call me to learn more about kids health and Peanut Butter Cups.

Homemade Heat Pack For Vancouver Kids

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Homemade Heat Pack For Vancouver Kids

Vancouver parents are great at helping their children stay healthy and safe. Today on the Delta Children’s Health Blog, we wanted to give parents another way to help their kids: homemade heat packs. These easy-to-make heat packs are great for growing pains, sore muscles, or just some extra coziness at bedtime.

To start, simply go to any fabric store in the Langley, Surrey, or Richmond area and choose some fabric (actually, you could even use an old t-shirt, fabric scraps, or a sock you have lying around). Cut two layers of the fabric one inch bigger than the desired size of the heat pack you would like for your child. A long rectangular shape is usually best.

Next, starting with one of the long sides, sew along the edges making sure to leave room for the seam allowance. Leave one short end open and fill the bag 2/3 full of rice. You can add a few drops of essential oil or herbs (these can be found at most Delta natural food stores) to give the heat pack a pleasant odor for your child. Tie the bag off at the open end with some cotton string, or stitch it shut, and you’re done!

When your ready to use it, be safe by only heating it in the microwave for one minute. Check to see if it’s warm enough, then add time in short increments from there. If your kids prefer a cold pack in the summer, these bags can go in the freezer to chill for a spell.

If you want to get extra fancy, any Langley, Surrey, or Richmond fabric store would have interesting trimmings to add. But remember to avoid ribbons that have metal wire in them.

Healthy, happy Vancouver kids and their parents can be comfortable all year long with these quick and easy heat packs!

Top Home Businesses In Langley

Most of the elementary schools in Vancouver seem to have more random days off than in years past. Sometimes these days can catch parents off guard. What to do when your kids are going to be home all day in the middle of the week?! Well, if you didn’t schedule appointments with your Delta pediatrician or dentist for a check-up, then try one of these fun ideas to keep your kids active and healthy on their days off.

1. Help them make a treasure hunt, indoors our out, depending on the weather. Once they’re done they can invite friends over to find the treasure (the treasure can be almost anything, since the real prize is following the clues!). When the hunt is over, serve a small picnic for the hungry hunters.

2. Hold an art exhibit. Get out the paints and modeling clay and then let your kids spend the morning creating works of art to display.

3. Healthy kids are active kids, so help them plan a kid Olympics! Give them the freedom to choose how to judge and award medals, then sit back and watch them wear themselves out!

4. Have a family history day. Encourage your kids to write in their journals and ask them to share some favorite family stories that you can record in their own words. If you have stories of your ancestors, this is a good time to share them with your kids.

5. Go visit a local Richmond, Surrey, or Langley museum, historical site, petting zoo, or aquarium. Remember, this is a day to do something with your kids that you’ve always been putting off, so do it!

6. Visit a resident of a local Vancouver convalescent home. Some elderly men and women rarely get visitors. Your kids will feel good about brightening someone’s day. They could bring them flowers or an original piece of art. (See activity number 2.) My name is Phil Hoskins and I want to help Vancouver families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Langley concern me. I am the owner of a Vancouver area home business that sells Peanut Butter Cups.

Rethinking Vancouver Schools

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Rethinking Vancouver Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy Vancouver Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the Vancouver area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the Vancouver community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Sims, AIA, “Designing Schools To Fight Childhood Obesity,” School Designer, May 2007, http://www.schooldesigner.com/Articles/Designing-Schools-to-Fight-Childhood-Obesity-Part-1.asp, accessed on May 16, 2011

Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated Vancouver schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As Vancouver parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in BC receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all Vancouver children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your BC city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our BC communities.

5 Benefits Of Family Dinners For Langley Kids

Posted by: Phil    in Child Health

Richmond Kids Health

Langley parents have to juggle schedules in order to help their kids use their time to do things that will help them be healthy and successful. Prioritizing is the name of the game for most Richmond, Delta and Surrey families. With all this competition for your child’s time, don’t discount the powerful benefits from simple family rituals such as family meal time.

Studies have shown that kids who have frequent family dinners gain the following benefits:

1. Their grades improve

2. The meals they eat are healthier

3. They are less likely to try cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana

4. They enjoy an increase in family communication

5. These children are less likely to suffer from childhood obesity

If your family dinners are less frequent than you would like them to be, here are some tips. Start by setting a small goal, like sitting down for dinner twice a week, and then add days on after that. Next, involve the kids by letting them help plan and prepare the meals and set the table. Lastly, always make mealtime a technology-free zone: no TV or phones allowed!

And remember, even if you’re in a rush and have to pick up dinner at a local Richmond, Surrey, and Langley restaurant, take the time to sit down together to eat. Your family will still enjoy many of these benefits.

My name is Phil Hoskins and I want to help Delta families to raise healthy, happy kids. I am the owner of my own Vancouver area home business that sells Peanut Butter Cups.
