Plastic Alert For Langley Parents

   Posted by: Phil

Plastic Alert For Langley Parents Hello new Langley parents. Today’s Healthy Langley Children’s blog focuses on BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA), the dangerous compound used in plastics manufacturing can now be detected everywhere in our environment: in our food, clothing, homes, offices, soil, water: you name it.

‘Since at least 1936 it has been known that BPA mimics estrogens, binding to the same receptors throughout the human body as natural female hormones.’1

What does this mean for Langley kids? Numerous scientific studies suggest an increased risk of cancer and neurological problems.

Langley infants are the most susceptible to even minute amounts of BPAs. Unfortunately, most infant formula containers and plastic bottles contain BPAs and other toxins.

What can Langley parents do to reduce the risk of these chemicals finding their way into their child’s formula or baby food?

1) Do not heat plastic containers in the microwave.
2) Do not wash plastic containers in hot water.
3) Consider using glass bottles and containers.

These are simple steps that any Langley parent or day-care provider can take. Toss your plastic bottles today! For more information about children’s health issues, call me at 604.943.8598.

Safest Cars For Surrey Families

Safest Cars For Surrey Families

Hello Surrey parents! Welcome to my Vancouver children’s health blog. I am an advocate for improved health and safety for Surrey kids. I also sell an exceptional nutritional product called Activ, the healthy chocolate beverage. If you would like to learn more about one of the best snacks for kids, call me today at 604.943.8598.

I like lists, they are short and to-the-point. Every once in a while I run across a ‘Top Five’ or ‘Top Ten’ article such as: ‘The Ten Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Surrey,’ ‘The Top Five Nutritional Kids Foods,’ or ‘The Five Best Family Attractions in the Vancouver Area.’

I recently read an article on Forbes.com that lists the safest cars of the year1. Here are three that caught my eye with my comments thrown in:

1) The Tesla Model S four-door electric sedan. (I’ve never heard of this car but the makers claim it will go ’300 zero-emission miles on one charge.’1 That’s a lot of trips to your closest Surrey grocery store with no adverse environmental impact!)
2) BMW Five Series. (This isn’t your ordinary Surrey kid hauler but it sure is pretty.)
3) Chevrolet Cruze. (This small sedan has the most budget-friendly MSRP of $16,275.)

As Vancouver parents, our children’s’ health and safety should be our top priority. When it comes time to buy a new family car in Surrey, remember to check the safety ratings.

Are Multivitamins Necessary For Surrey Kids?

Are Multivitamins Necessary For Surrey Kids?

Hello Surrey! Welcome to today’s Surrey children’s nutrition post. I am Phil Hoskins, and I promote children’s health in Surrey and the V4M 1Z9 zip code area.

Today’s post discusses children’s vitamins. Many Surrey parents give their kids a chewable or liquid multivitamin. We all know that it is essential for Surrey kids to get sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals and we often give them a pill to fill in nutritional gaps, just in case. Are multivitamins necessary for Surrey kids?

I have found that Surrey pediatricians have varying opinions about this issue. Some Vancouver children’s doctors recommend parents give their children vitamins in pill form or at least don’t discourage it.

More importantly, Surrey pediatricians urge parents to feed their children a variety of nutritious foods, presumably because vitamins and minerals in foods are better absorbed.

The Mayo Clinic website offers the following advice for Surrey parents who give their children a multivitamin:1

Make sure the multivitamin is designed for your child’s age group.
Choose one that provides 100 percent of the daily value (DV) for all vitamins and minerals.
Store multivitamins out of your child’s reach and make it clear that they are not candy.
Don’t use multivitamins as a replacement for proper nutrition.

I sell a great-tasting healthy snack packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other good stuff for kids. To order, contact me today.

NIH Children's Check-Up Guidelines In VancouverAs BC parents, we know our children’s health includes physical, mental and social well-being. Most Vancouver parents are aware of the essentials in keeping their kids healthy; providing nutritious meals, making sure they get adequate sleep and physical activity, and guaranteeing their safety.

It is also necessary for our Vancouver kids to receive regular checkups with their BC health care providers. Not only will these visits track your Vancouver child’s development, but will aid in averting health problems.

According to the NIH, besides regular checkups, school-age Richmond and Delta children should also see their Vancouver doctor for:

  • Significant weight gain or loss
  • Sleep problems or change in behavior
  • Fever higher than 102
  • Rashes or skin infections
  • Frequent sore throats
  • Breathing problems

I would love to share more children’s health information with you. Please call me today!

Treating Delta Kids’ Minor Cuts And Bumps

   Posted by: Phil

Treating Delta Kids' Minor Cuts And Bumps

Spending lots of time outside is important for healthy kids in Delta, and with all that outdoor adventure come the inevitable bumps, scrapes, and cuts. But parents in the Richmond, Surrey, and Langley areas shouldn’t fear, all you need to know are a few simple steps for treating your children’s minor injuries.

A minor cut should stop bleeding on its own, but using a clean cloth and applying gentle pressure may be necessary.

Once bleeding has stopped, rinse the wound with water and pull out any debris with alcohol-cleansed tweezers. The area around the wound can be cleaned with mild soap and a washcloth, no hydrogen peroxide or alcohol is necessary.

Once the wound is clean, apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream or ointment. Appropriate topical antibiotics can be found at any drugstore in the Delta area. Next, you should cover your child’s wound with a bandage. When the bandage becomes wet or dirty it should be changed. Once a wound has healed enough to keep infection out, bandages should not be used since air exposure will speed your child’s healing.

Remember to watch for signs of infection such as redness, drainage, increased pain, swelling, or warmth. Contact your Richmond, Surrey, or Langley area pediatrician if you have any other concerns.

Internet Safety For Richmond Kids

   Posted by: Phil

Internet Safety For Richmond Kids

No Richmond parent wants their child to be exposed to Internet pornography, however, this tragedy occurs everyday. Why is there such a disconnect?

Some Richmond parents may not realize that their young child can navigate the computer like a pro. Others may believe that their child would never go looking for inappropriate material.

If you think your Vancouver kids are too young to worry about it, don’t be so sure. BC parents continue to report that they found out too late that their child was exposed. I urge you to take precautions now.

With Internet pornography increasing everyday and young people succumbing to this cybermonster, Vancouver parents wonder what they can do to prevent this from ever happening to their kids.

This advice bears repeating: Richmond parents should put the computer in an open area so that it can be monitored. In addition, many forms of web protection are available for free. Though it is time-consuming, Richmond parents would be wise to only allow their child use the Internet with Mom or Dad present.

Talk to your kids and ask them if they have encountered Internet pornography. Ask them what they did or what they would do in such a situation. Though this is a secondary concern: explain to them that certain web pages and ‘pop ups’ contain viruses that can damage the computer. Open communication is essential.

If your Richmond children have encountered pornography, perhaps at a friend’s house, emphasize its destructive nature and teach them that what they saw is degrading to men, women, and healthy relationships. Internet pornography is a plague with many Richmond victims, including children. It is up to Richmond parents and youth leaders to help Richmond children be safe online.

My name is Phil Hoskins and I care about Internet safety for Richmond kids. For more information about child raising topics, or to hear about a new healthy kids snack, contact me today at phil@philhoskins.com.

Delta Kids And Headaches

   Posted by: Phil

Delta Kids And Headaches

Hello Delta! My name is Phil Hoskins. Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a local Activ, the healthy chocolate beverage representative and I am also an advocate for BC children’s health.

Children are no less prone to headaches than adults. If your Delta child complains of pain in their head don’t ignore it.

Some of the most common triggers for headaches in children are:

Missing meals or dehydration
Getting insufficient sleep
Being under stress
Taking certain medications
Spending too much time in front of a flat screen
Consuming caffeine
Receiving a mild head injury
Infection

Eating certain foods can also trigger headaches for Delta kids and teens. Keeping a food log for your child can help you determine if diet is a factor.

If you are prone to migraines, The National Headache Foundation recommends avoiding nuts, ripened cheeses, herring, pizza, and anything fermented.

Is Juicing Better For Vancouver Kids?

   Posted by: Phil

Is Juicing Better For Vancouver Kids?

Vancouver health trends come and go and I have recently noticed that the practice of juicing fruits and vegetables has made its way back into the BC children’s nutrition spotlight.

In my experience, I have found that the only Vancouver parents who have been successful at making their own super-healthy juices over the long term are Vancouver vegetarians who dedicate a lot of daily time to preparing their food.

Most Vancouver people who buy an expensive juicer use it for a few weeks before it is relegated to the back shelf of the pantry. Though juicing provides a way to improve your children’s nutrition, it can be time-consuming and expensive. After buying fresh fruits and vegetables, it can cost several dollars to make one glass. Of course, if you have ever tasted fruit and vegetable juices made fresh, you know how delicious they are. For many Vancouver parents, this is worth every minute and every dollar spent.

Does juicing provide more nutrition than eating whole fruits and vegetables?

I haven’t come across any convincing evidence of this but I do see the value for Vancouver parents whose kids enjoy drinking juice more than eating whole fruits and vegetable. Mixing vegetables with sweet fruits in a juice can disguise their taste and make them more palatable than the same vegetables raw or cooked.

Vancouver parents who would like to start juicing should keep in mind the fact that juicing usually removes all the fiber from the fruits and veggies used. A glass of fresh juice also contains a lot of calories!

To order a fantastic kids snack that is packed with vitamins and minerals, call me today at 604.943.8598.

Healthy Delta Kids Are Well Rested

   Posted by: Phil

Healthy Delta Kids Are Well Rested

Getting an adequate amount of sleep is essential to the health of Delta kids. During sleep, muscles, skin, and bones actually grow and repair themselves. The immune system is recharged during sleep, so this is especially important during the Vancouver cold and flu season. Because the brain processes the stimulus and information it received during the previous day, sleep is crucial for healthy brain development.

Parents in the Langley, Surrey, and Richmond areas should do everything they can to make bedtime work for their family. One of the most important things is for Vancouver parents to model healthy sleep behavior for their children.

If you want your child to follow a consistent bedtime schedule, you’ll need to follow one yourself.

It’s also important to check out your child’s sleep environment in your Vancouver home. What is the temperature and noise level of the room? White noise might help your child sleep better. Fans or humidifiers that can be purchased at any Richmond Wal-Mart, Surrey drug store, or Langley Target store are inexpensive and do the job well.

Give your child a screen-free room in which to fall asleep. This means no TVs, computers, iPods, or cell phones. In fact, turning off all screens an hour or two before bedtime will help the whole family fall asleep on time.

Make sure you include the children in planning a bedtime routine and then stick to it. If they have trouble saying goodbye after you’ve tucked them in, try giving them a special security object like a blanket or stuffed animal to fall asleep with.

Food Allergies In Surrey Children

   Posted by: Phil

Food Allergies In Surrey Children The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology estimates that around eight percent of U.S. kids are affected by food allergies.

Eight foods account for most children’s food allergies in Vancouver: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, nuts, and wheat. Strawberries and tomatoes can also cause food allergies in young Surrey kids, though generally not in adults.

Type and severity of allergy symptoms in Vancouver kids vary, but may show up as itchy eyes, nose or throat, trouble breathing, gastrointestinal upset, or hives.

If you suspect your child may have a food allergy, keep a food journal of everything he or she eats (including beverages) for a week to show your Richmond pediatrician. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may scratch the skin with a small amount of an allergen to observe the reaction.
