Does Your BC Family Have An Emergency Kit?

Smart residents prepare for emergencies, and parents of young children in the Vancouver area should be aware of the special nature of preparing their families for emergencies.

Since the health and safety of all family members is important, everyone’s needs should be taken into account when preparing emergency provisions.

A 72-hour emergency kit should be easy to grab and contain essentials like water, food, first aid kit, flashlight, prescription medications, etc. Delta families should consider what each child eats. Formula and bottles should be included if you have infants, and soft baby food (and a spoon!) for toddlers. Don’t forget diapers and baby wipes: you can find convenient travel sizes of these at Richmond, Surrey, and Langley area drugstores.

Since healthy kids grow and change so quickly, Delta families should update these emergency kits at least twice a year. A good reminder is daylight savings time. When Vancouver families change their clocks, they should change the food and supplies in their kits.

Green Veggies Boost Immunity For Delta Kids

The study found that green vegetables help produce a chemical that is important for a strong immune system. The chemical provides signals to the immune cells in the gut and skin, helping them to function properly.

If your Delta kids are like mine, convincing them to eat more green vegetables is as hard as getting them to clean their rooms. However, Vancouver parents can find sneaky ways to add more green vegetables to their children’s diets.

Creative Lunch Ideas For Your Delta Kids

Instead of the old standby PB and J, put a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter in a plastic container. Then give your child healthy things to dip into it, like whole wheat crackers, celery, or apple slices.

Bento boxes are a fun way to to pack a creative and eye-catching lunch. Originating in Japan, bento boxes have small compartments to separate elements of a meal and can be found at many Richmond and Surrey area stores. They’re great for child-sized portions of food, and for kids who hate the idea of one food touching another food.

Finger foods are a fun lunch for children, and it’s easy to keep them nutritious.

Low-fat cheese cubes, fruit slices, and veggie sticks can add up to a filling meal for kids with all the vitamins and minerals they need. Sandwiches are a lunch time staple for kids, but you can try mixing up the starch. Instead of bread, try a whole-grain wrap or a whole-wheat pita.

Eating too much before bedtime is never a good idea for anyone, but a small snack may be just the ticket to dreamland for little ones in Richmond. Foods containing the amino acid tryptophan are a natural sleep aid, especially if they are coupled with carbohydrates, which help make tryptophan more available to the brain.

Bedtime foods you can purchase at your local Delta grocer include soy milk, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes, such as lentils or chick peas. These foods coupled with a healthy carbohydrate make the perfect bedtime snack. Your Delta kiddos will be visiting the sandman before you know it.

In these days of rising prices and shrinking paychecks, Vancouver parents are trying to save money wherever they can. They shop sales for food, clothes, school supplies, and other necessities.

Many Vancouver thrift stores have seen their business increase in the past few years as parents have discovered how much money they can save by buying used items. Perfectly good toys, clothes, books, sports gear, and children’s furniture can be purchased for a fraction of retail price at Vancouver thrift stores.

One place Vancouver parents should not scrimp, however, is on their child’s car seat. If you are considering buying a used child safety seat, make sure it comes with the user’s manual, the model number, and date of manufacture. If it has ever been involved in anything more severe than a low-speed fender bender, don’t buy it.

Delta Teens At Risk For Eating Disorders

Hello! Welcome to the Delta children’s health blog. I am entrpreneur and investor in human spirit Phil Hoskins. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Delta children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Vancouver area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Vancouver about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.¹ According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Delta parents should be aware that even young Vancouver children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

BC pediatricians can help Delta parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

‘Don’t Worry Mom, I’m Saving The World!’

Vancouver parents: do you know what video games your kids are playing? If you haven’t looked through their games for a while, it’s probably time that you did. While playing rock band or sports games can be fun and entertaining, other games can be wrongly influencing your child with graphic violence and course language.

Some Delta parents are unaware that many games have become more questionable when it comes to content. Many companies that sell violent games target their marketing at younger boys even though mature ratings specify seventeen and up. As with most forms of entertainment, the video game industry has continued down a slide of immorality and vulgarity.

Many Vancouver kids rationalize: ‘Oh, they don’t affect me,’ or, ‘It’s just a shooting game,’ or ‘I’m only killing zombies,’ or, ‘I can turn the blood off.’

I believe that many Vancouver kids are being desensitized by very graphic portrayals of violence and criminal behavior. Especially if they play hours on end.

Video games with the mature rating have become as bad or worse then R rated films. It is up to Delta parents to monitor their children’s game purchases and decide what is and what isn’t allowed.

If your son or daughter wants to play questionable games, discuss the content and explain why you object. Show concern for your kids by monitoring their games and limiting their playing time. Remember that video games, like other leisurely pastimes, can interfere with school.

I know some Delta parents who have hidden the gaming controllers because their child kept sneaking improper games into the house.
